Because I have battled rosacea (similar in appearance to acne) for most of my life – nearly 70 years – I have used many types of antibiotics to fight the problem. My current drug is minocycline (generic Minocin). I have used it for around fifteen (15) years and am currently taking 100 mg caps at one per day (but some dermatologists will prescribe up to 4 x 100 mg which means it’s a pretty safe drug). Side effects for me have been limited to an occasional rash on my back and/or stomach and chest with occasional spots in wear areas like shirt collars and sleeves. On occasion I also have whelps on my hands. All of these side effects are treatable with various creams such as urea cream, and creams/ointments such as clobetasol propionate and halobetasol propionate (ask your doctor). Your medication should come with warnings about side effects. Pay attention and report any changes you experience to your doctor. Taking minocycline will not affect your weight one way or the other. But it might upset your stomach so take the caps/tablets with plenty of water. Last, this medication, like all medications in the tetracycline class, will make you photosensitive while you take it so avoid long exposure to the sun as it might create or enhance any side effects. For me this medication is about as good as it gets. How long will you need it? That will depend on how long your condition lasts. If you are young, say teens to early twenties, probably a couple of years. Your long term reward will be smooth unblemished skin.
