Superfoods are foods that are very “nutritionally dense”, and have added benefits to our health which come from “antioxidants” and “phytochemicals”. Next we’ll go into what these statements actually mean in real terms.

Being nutritionally dense means that the food has high concentrations of essential vitamins and dietary minerals that we know are required by human beings. That includes vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K and so on, and also dietary minerals such as Calcium, Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc and so on. But these things are found in many different foods already. All foods contain at least some of the vitamins and minerals in varying quantities, so what’s this all about?

They big difference is that superfoods have an unusually high concentration of nutrients for their size, when looked at alongside normal foods. For example, the humble cucumber is mostly – 90% or thereabouts – water, so to get any significant levels of nutrients from a cucumber you’d have to eat a whole one. Or two!

Superfoods are so strong that even as much as a handfull can give you a good sized portion of nutrients, occasionally providing as much as you need in a single day, in a single bite. Now that’s super! Very few foods contain such high levels of nutrients in such small amounts, and that’s why superfoods are so healthy. They can deliver nutrition like you’ve never seen before.

Next, we’ll talk more about antioxidants and phytochemicals. These may be new words for you, so I want to explore them before we get any further.

Inside your body, oxygen reacts with cells in a process called oxidation. Unfortunately, this process can damage cells. Antioxidants are natural compounds which prevent or stop oxidation, and prevent the damage caused by it. This damage is linked to all sorts of nasties including premature ageing, degenerative diseases and some cancers. Antioxidants prevent the damage from oxidation by interfering with the chemical reaction and stopping it from happening at all, and so in theory reduce any unwanted effects. As an example, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant which we require for everyday use.

Second, phytochemicals. These are natural chemical compounds found in plants and animals, but which are not essential for human survival. “Essential” vitamins and minerals are known to be required by our bodies for us to live, but we’re only just starting to really understand the real potential benefits of these new phytochemicals. Lots of the amazing anti-cancer and anti-heart disease effects of superfoods are reported to come from various phytochemicals.

So, superfoods not only contain astronomical levels of essential vitamins and dietary minerals, they also have all the bonus antioxidants and phytochemicals which come with some amazing possible benefits!

Here’s the big summary: as we’re human, we have to have vitamins and minerals to live. Without these essential nutrients, our bodies stop working and we become ill. Now we’re uncovering powerful new nutrients which can help to further boost our health and protect us from old age and disease. Superfoods are foods which mix high doses of both essential and non-essential nutrients and taste great too – so there’s no reason not to include superfoods, start eating superfoods as part of a healthy eating diet.
